So how’s the down time and just “being” going?
How’s another week of summer under your family’s belt?
What’s something you wish to be different this summer with your family?
Well, summer is a great season to hone in on what may need tweaking in your home and in your relationship with your child(ren). The bustle of school, after school activities and homework is out of the way. And, even if your child is in camp, it’s a much different pace and set of expectations than what’s been going on throughout the school year.
Let’s say you’d like to help your child gain more confidence and independence over the next two months. First, high five to you as this is great and something that will reap many benefits and rewards in your relationship with one another.
By now I’m sure you know how much I like to ask questions and the first question is, “What are the areas in your relationship with your child that you’ve been hesitant, wary, uneasy or uncomfortable to see her flop, fail, not do correctly?
Why am I asking this and how does this connect to confidence and independence? The reason is because we have likely been unconsciously interfering with the very confidence and independence we wish to be seeing from our children. As parents, the majority of us have a hard time “letting” our kids struggle with things – especially in those areas where we hold a high value and priority: cleanliness, orderliness, timeliness, achievement, safety, etc. However, in our efforts to prevent them from falling short in these areas we’ve accumulated a snowball of many mini-events that counteracts their ability to meet, achieve and even succeed at fulfilling and embodying these values for themselves. How often have you stepped in and just did it yourself or finished for them?
Take the summer months to re-train yourself and your kids on the words, actions and behaviors you wish to see more of:
