How are you during this "back to school" frenzy? Interestingly enough, not because of my own two children, but my mind and time has been centered around the "back to school" buzz. In the last two weeks I've delivered two different trainings and curriculum for faculty at an out-of-state university and another for students at a local CUNY (City University of New York). Although my audience of faculty and students is different from my day to day audience of parents, a common interest remains the same -- improving relationships. No matter our age or stage in life, we will forever be life-long learners. Relationships are nuanced and complex, and those with our children are even more so because of this battling duality to both control them and foster their independence. For so many of us, our identity as a parent is closely tied to our children's developing identities. Therefore, we become attached to the "outcome" of our parenting rather than the moment to moment experiences with our children - which in turn is what's truly shaping their futures. Our children can bring out our best and they can bring out our worst which is why so many of us end our days in guilt, self doubt and frustration. The curious part to me is when I have trainings for non-parents, I am constantly re-assured that the arena where self-development and introspection matters most is in parenting.
When we deliberately choose to be reflective and introspective in how we're contributing to the power struggles with our children, we can then create a space of growth. Our greatest learning happens when we truly process and understand what actually happened in a given situation. Does it take two to tango? Yes, of course. However, our children are modeling and mirroring the energy we're putting out. As the adult in the room, our children are learning to manage their own frustrations through the lens that mom and dad manage their own. So, when things are reaching their tipping point, what's going on for you?
