As I do this work, and with each conversation I have, I am reassured of the immense power we have in building our children's resilience. So, what is resilience?
And you know something ... Isn't this skill and virtue at the core of our parenting compass? In fact, aren't so many of our concerns, fears & worries about our children's potential IN-ability to be resilient from the setbacks or challenges in school, at the playground, in after school activities, with friends? Being a model and teacher to our families on HOW to do this - how to be resilient - is what will cultivate our children's success because success is an attitude and mindset of looking at our environment with a lens on opportunities and possibilities. As we train our brains to no longer see challenges or stress, but instead see "where can I go from here?", "what can I do differently?", "what's the opportunity that's being presented?"' or "How can I turn this around?" then we instantly exercise our resilience and ability to "bounce back"! When our children begin to adopt this mindset and navigate their world by flexing their resilience muscle, this learned approach will become second nature. HOW powerful is that!?! HOW limitless do our children become!?! And guess what ... it starts with us. I recognize that each of us is in a different place when it comes to flexing our own resilience muscle, so I ask that you take a moment to reply to this 2-part prompt: Imagine each of your children 10 years from now answering what they learned about resilience from growing up in your home. Write what they would say: Ok, so my next question: Is there a difference between what you wrote above versus what you'd hope or like for them to say? If so, what can you do NOW to help cultivate an environment of resilience that leads with an attitude and mindset of opportunity and possibility? Thanks for being one of my many parents that's on this journey in trying to get it right because we're all looking for answers on how to do this better and differently. Give yourself a pat on the back because you're making the effort to look for answers. Let's do this together and pave a path of strength, resilience and self-awareness. Enjoy the week ahead and if you haven't already...
