A recent university study featured in the New York Times "makes the case that if we want to improve children’s opportunities for success, one of the most powerful potential levers for change is not the children themselves, but rather the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of the adults who surround them." The research emphasizes a pivotal concept in parenthood and echos what I've been discussing with you all along - HOW we engage, HOW we communicate and HOW we interact absolutely matters. The success of our children is supported by the tone and environment we create at home. Here are some KEY CONCLUSIONS:
Throughout this past year of weekly boosts, I've dedicated several newsletters to what it means to parent anabolically vs catabolically and this study clearly supports when we parent anabolically, "the children’s ability to process stress improved." Our children's meltdowns, tantrums, power struggles, defiance and resistance is mostly a reflection of not having the tools to manage their own stress. Stress is a natural and necessary part of life, but how we teach and model our children to deal with, cope and persevere through disappointments and frustrations will makes all the difference. These are the tools we're equipping them with as they go from learning how to share their favorite toy, understanding that it's time to leave the park, recognize and participate in "clean-up" time, accept and honor family /house rules and eventually navigate their responsibilities as a student. It is fully within our control to promote "healthier emotional and psychological habits and mind-sets that [will] enable [our] children to negotiate life effectively inside and outside of school." If these conclusions motivate you, I welcome you to open and read my FREE 7 Levels of Parenting report.
